Rusk challenged the community to develop an alternative school that would keep young middle-class families in the city; while also providing a high quality education to city residents who lack the resources for private schools.
To attract both suburban and city students, the founders designed York Academy’s curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, making it the only school in the county to provide a world-class education at no-cost for families.
By offering an IB education, students are exposed to a transdisciplinary approach to learning - one that combines rigorous academics with personal and social development. By implementing this program, York Academy is committed to creating inquiring minds and compassionate students who desire a more peaceful world.
York Academy opened on August 22, 2011 in the historic, pre-Civil War Smyser-Royer building located in the City of York with students in kindergarten through second grade, and now serves K-7th grade. The 2017-2018 year will open with the addition of 8th grade and a new state of the art Upper School is scheduled to be completed by the 2018-2019 school year.
The school’s downtown York location provides additional learning opportunities for all students; from field trips to the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center; numerous local museums; cooking classes at Central Market; and swimming lessons at the YMCA.
These experiences strengthen the ties between our school and the City of York, and also encourages students to understand their role as members of the community.
