The Rent-A-Kid program offers a meaningful opportunity for middle and high school students in grades 7 through 12 to assist older adults in their communities with everyday household tasks and seasonal yard work. At the same time, it helps foster intergenerational connections that benefit both students and seniors alike.
How the Program Works
Through Rent-A-Kid, older adults age 60 and older who need assistance with light-duty chores—such as mowing lawns, shoveling snow, dusting, or other routine household tasks—can connect with local students who are available to help.
Interested older adults begin by contacting the Rent-A-Kid coordinator through the York County Agency on Aging. The coordinator provides contact information for participating youth in the area. From there, the older adult and student communicate directly to discuss job details, including the work to be completed, timing, and agreed-upon pay.
All arrangements are made directly between the older adult and the student, allowing flexibility based on the nature of the task and individual needs.
Pay and Expectations
The program recommends that students be compensated at least minimum wage for their work. However, depending on the type of job and the older adult’s circumstances, payment is ultimately negotiated between both parties prior to the start of any work.
How Students Can Participate
Students interested in joining the Rent-A-Kid program should contact their school counselor or reach out directly to the York County Agency on Aging Coordinator at 717-771-9103 to request an application.
