Second Saturday: Fire Prevention Month

By York County History Center October 8, 2024

In commemoration of the 153rd anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage and loss. The York County History Center as part of our Second Saturday program is planning a day of activities at the new History Center Museum and Fire Museum. On October 12, we will offer a variety of hands-on experiences and a presentation from local historian Greg Halpin.

Greg Halpin is a lifelong resident of York City, and a third-generation member of the York Fire Department. He retired from the City of York Department of Fire/Rescue Services in 2015 after a 34-year career, retiring at the rank of Deputy Fire Chief. He was appointed the department’s first-ever Chief Historian. For about 50 years, the City of York purchased exclusively American LaFrance fire apparatus. This presentation will explore the relationship between York and the American LaFrance company, with vintage photographs of many of these vehicles. This presentation was originally developed for an international antique fire apparatus collectors convention held in York in June.

This is a FREE event and parts of the program will take place at the History Center Museum (HC) as well as the Fire Museum (Fire).
