Step back in time and experience York's dramatic role during the Civil War at our Civil War Day event on July 20th at Penn Park. Though the Civil War's bloodiest battles took place far from York, our city found itself caught in the crossfire of this divisive war. In the summer of 1863, York briefly surrendered to the Confederates before returning to Union control just days later.

Civil War Day showcases the captivating stories of Yorkers and people throughout the Susquehanna Valley during this tumultuous time. Meet reenactors from the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and hear firsthand accounts from figures like Sister Catherine of the Sisters of Charity, portrayed by Dominish Miller. Learn the courageous tale of William Goodridge, a successful York businessman who secretly aided the Underground Railroad, as brought to life by Kelly Summerford.

The highlight of the day will be a dramatic reenactment of the Surrender of York. Mayor Michael Helfrich takes on the role of prominent York industrialist A.B. Farquhar as he confronts Confederate General Jubal Early, played by Michael Sipes. Witness this pivotal chapter in York's history as it unfolds before your eyes.

The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Penn Park, located at 100 W College Ave. in York.
