The first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping returns to the Appell Center this spring, blending percussive dance styles, traditional African dances and contemporary dance and art forms into a powerful artistic experience. Much more than a dance show, Step Afrika also integrates songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation.
Founded in 1994 as an exchange program with the Soweto Dance Theatre of Johannesburg, Step Afrika! Is the first professional Dance Company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The Company ranks in the top five African American dance companies in the US, and is the largest African American-led arts organization in Washington, DC. It is Washington, DC’s only cultural ambassador. They perform globally as an official U.S. Cultural Ambassador.
