By Appell Center for the Performing Arts November 2, 2022

2022 may be coming to a close before we know it, but things are just getting started at Appell Center for the Performing Arts, where we truly have something for everyone! We are thrilled to welcome an amazing range of artists to the stage – a classic rock icon, a true legend of Soul, holiday collaborations in classical, jazz and song you won’t see anywhere else, a new roster of comedy and R&B performers, plus a diverse selection of films – holiday traditions, exhilarating outdoor adventures and concert biopics, and so much more… and you can only see them at the Appell Center.

Legendary guitarist and songwriter Lindsey Buckingham arrives to the Strand Theatre on Nov. 6 performing selections from his new solo release and classic Fleetwood Mac gems. Later in November we see the return of “The Empress of Soul” Gladys Knight on Nov. 17, and we “Give Thanks” with Black Violin and their signature fusion of classical and hip hop styles in a spectacular holiday presentation on Nov. 19. Thanksgiving weekend features York Symphony Orchestra’s annual Holiday Pops Spectacular on Nov. 26 with lots of yuletide cheer and a “Holly Jolly Singalong!”

CapFilm in November features music legends as well. On Nov. 5 “The Grateful Dead Meet Up at the Movies,” commemorates the 50th anniversary of one of the band’s most iconic gigs at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen in 1972. And on Nov. 3 don’t miss “Duran Duran – A Hollywood High,” a docu-concert film celebration of the band’s four-decade career.

December rings in the season with a “Big Band Holidays” concert for the entire family on Dec. 3 by the incomparable Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring NEA Jazz Master and multi-Grammy Award winning vocalist Dianne Reeves, and special guest, and emerging legend in her own right, Samara Joy. What better way to kick off the month than with these traditional holiday favorites performed by world-class musicians!

Karla Bonoff and Livingston Taylor are “Home for the Holidays” in the Capitol Theatre on Dec. 9. These singer/songwriters will bring a seasonally spiced show that will remind you of what a truly wonderful time of the year it is. Don’t miss Greater York Dance’s annual Nutcracker Ballet on Dec. 10, where professional dancers will share the stage with York's pre-professional regional youth ballet company, The Midstate Ballet. This traditional classical ballet will delight persons of all ages with its music, mystery and magic. But wait… there’s more! On Dec. 11, Greater York Dance will also present The Hip Nut,” a one-of-a-kind, multicultural and contemporary retelling of the classic Nutcracker story. On Dec. 17, the “rough but smooth” male vocal quartet Jagged Edge makes its Strand Theatre debut with rich vocal harmonies that you just need to experience in person.

December’s CapFilm features the 2018 animated hit Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” featuring vocal characterizations by Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Seely an Rashida Jones. This presentation is Free, presented as part of First Friday in York on Dec. 2, and sponsored by UPMC.
