3 Lessons Learned During a Family Netflix Binge of Skylanders Academy

After being impressed with the second season of Skylanders Academy I knew my daughter and I had to check out season three. The third season starts out dark and everything we thought to be true has turned upside down. Spyro, our true of heart Skylander, has succumbed to the dark side and is under the control of Strykore, a villain that is determined to destroy the Core of Light to take over the world. Strykore has ordered Spyro to go back to the Academy to spy on the Skylanders from inside. With the fate of the Academy at stake, season three is intense but as always has positive messages weaved into each episode. In fact, my daughter and I learned three valuable lessons while Skylanders Academy Season Three on Netflix:

1. Love & Friendship Conquer All - One of the main reasons I loved season two was the messaging about the importance of friendship and the "We're only strong when we work together" theme. So I was a little concerned how I would feel about Spyro being under Strykore's dark magic. However, the more time Spyro spends at the Academy the more we see his kind spirit emerge. And while I will not ruin the plot line, I will say that this season shows us that love and friendship can conquer all. 

2. Trust Your Instincts - I love that Skylanders Academy has strong and fierce female lead characters, like Stealth Elf. In this season Stealth Elf is the only Skylander who believes Spyro is evil and has changed. And even though Spyro is her best friend, she learns a hard and important message that we must always trust our instincts and we must listen to our inner voices alerting us to danger, even if it is someone who we trust. 

3. Humor Does Not Have to be Raunchy - Too often we see adult humor laced into children's shows and while I think most of it is lost on children, I'm still not sure if it is sending the right message. I love that Skylanders Academy has never had a raunchy joke. They understand they are a cartoon and keep it strictly PG. While they do lace-in jokes for the older generation, you will never find a sexual innuendo or anything inappropriate for younger viewers. I find Skylanders Academy to be tasteful with positive messaging. 

Overall, Skylanders Academy is an awesome show that continues to earn my mom stamp of approval for my daughter due to it's tasteful and never raunchy humor, positive messages about self-confidence and self-awareness, and fun storylines.
