The York Academy Regional Charter School grew out of a community-wide effort which began in 1996. In a study conducted by David Rusk, a leading urban expert, a plan was devised to improve academic programming for children living in the city.

The York community was challenged by Rusk to develop a strategy keeping young middle-class families in the city; while also providing a high-quality education to urban residents who lack the resources for private schools. In 2011, York Academy opened its doors.

Since then, York Academy's PSSA test scores have consistently proven that the combination of low-income urban students with suburban middle-income students creates a positive learning environment for the entire school.

To attract both suburban and city students, the founders designed York Academy’s unique curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, making it the only school in the county to provide a top quality education at no cost for families.

Offering an IB education exposes students to a transdisciplinary approach to learning - one that combines rigorous academics with a focus on personal and social development. By implementing this program, York Academy is committed to creating inquiring minds and compassionate students who desire a more equitable and peaceful planet.

We are pleased to announce that the 2018-2019 year will open with the addition of a 9th grade class in a brand new state of the art Upper School, located at 2 West Hamilton Avenue.

The school’s downtown York location provides additional learning opportunities such as:

  •  Field trips to the Appell Center for the Performing Arts
  • Visits to local art galleries
  • Cooking classes at Central Market
  • Swimming lessons at the YMCA

These experiences strengthen the ties between our school and the City of York and also encourages our students to understand their responsibility within their community.
