Have you ever watched a few minutes of a show and were immediately hooked? You just knew it was something your family would love and there was an instant hype and excitement? That's how Netflix's newest series Spirit Riding Free was for me. Just a few minutes into the first episode I knew this show would quickly become one of my family's favorites with it's awesome display of tween self-empowerment, strong message of friendship, and entertaining story lines.
DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free series is inspired by DreamWork's Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimaaron and follows a girl named Lucky who has lost her mother and is moving to a new mid-western town with her father. She is nervous about attending a new school and meeting new friends but quickly meets her new besties Pru and Abigail. Through her new found friendships she discovers a love of riding horses, a love that she shares with her mother.
I love the positive message of self-empowerment that Spirit Riding Free demonstrates for my daughter. In the show Lucky, Pru and Abigail develop their friendship, support each other, overcome a little bullying, and find their inner strength and self-awareness. I found the characters to be relatable, the situations to be realistic, and the solutions to be healthy and educational for my daughter.
Plus the show is entertaining! The characters are fun and the story lines are absorbing. In the first two episodes you watch Lucky transition to a new home and state, see her develop friendship and avoid unhealthy ones, see her find her passion in horse riding all while saving her friends from an explosion, repairing a mistake, and attempting to qualify for an advance trail ride. The show is exciting and keeps you watching.
Mark your calendar because Spirit Riding Free premiers on Netflix Friday, May 5th. I can not wait to check out the rest of the series!
