In a significant move to honor a lasting civil rights legacy, the City of York has announced a historic street dedication in memory of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 28, 2026, coinciding with the 63rd anniversary of Dr. King’s pivotal “I Have a Dream” address delivered during the March on Washington in 1963.
The day’s events will kick off with a community rolling march and parade, starting at 10:00 AM from two different points in the city:
- East Route: Beginning at Edgar Street and College Avenue (East).
- West Route: Beginning at Belvidere Avenue and College Avenue (West).
Participating groups and individuals from both routes will meet at Beaver Street before proceeding together towards the final destination at Penn Park where a a formal dedication ceremony will take place at 11:00 AM. The ceremony will feature local leaders and guest speakers reflecting on Dr. King's impact and the ongoing work for social justice.
